Higher vertical resolution has long been a goal of oscilloscope designers, driven by the needs of engineers to measure finer detail on signals. However, delivering additional resolution means more than adding bits to the analog-to-digital converter (ADC) of the oscilloscope. Modern oscilloscopes incorporate a multi-faceted approach that combines not only higher ADC resolution, but also digital signal processing, trigger system integration, higher ENOB and low-noise analog front ends to achieve an effective increase in resolution.
